What is Backwaters?
Backwaters is a luxury bathware brand specialising in handcrafted wooden sanitary and bath products. Our collections combine the natural beauty of premium hardwood with skilled craftsmanship and modern engineering to create distinctive bathroom experiences.
What products does Backwaters offer?
Our range includes:
- Wooden bathtubs
- Kids’ bathtubs
- Countertop washbasins
- Freestanding washbasins
- Wall-mounted washbasins
- Wooden integrated basins
Each product is designed to bring warmth, individuality and natural elegance into contemporary bathroom spaces.
What type of wood is used?
Our featured products are primarily handcrafted from carefully selected premium teak wood — valued for its strength, natural oil content, durability and resistance to moisture.
Are Backwaters products handmade?
Yes. Every piece is meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans. The wood is carefully selected, shaped, carved, sanded, coated, cured and inspected through a detailed fifteen-stage production process.
Are all wooden bathware products identical?
No. Natural variations in wood grain, colour, texture and shape make every piece unique. These differences are part of the product’s natural character and are not considered defects.
Can wooden washbasins and bathtubs withstand water?
Yes. Our products undergo specialised drying, sealing and coating processes. A crystal-clear epoxy layer and multiple marine-grade protective coatings protect the wood from moisture and everyday bathroom use.
How is the wood protected from cracking or warping?
The wood is naturally air-dried and then kiln-dried under controlled conditions, reducing moisture content to approximately 8–12% — minimising the risk of cracking, movement and warping.
Are the products treated against termites and fungus?
Yes. During production, the wood undergoes anti-termite and anti-fungal treatment to support long-term durability and protection.
What quality checks are carried out?
Every product is inspected before packing across:
- Product dimensions
- Surface finish
- Coating quality
- Overall craftsmanship
- Water resistance
Only products that meet our quality requirements are prepared for delivery.
What product finishes are available?
Backwaters products are designed to preserve and highlight the natural character of teak. Available finishes may include natural teak, natural brown walnut and selected decorative combinations, depending on the product. Contact our team to confirm options for your preferred model.
What mounting options are available?
Depending on the product, washbasins are available above-counter, freestanding or wall-mounted. Dimensions and mounting specifications are listed on each product page.
Do Backwaters products come with a warranty?
Every piece is supported by a 2-year replacement warranty and ongoing maintenance support. With proper care, our pieces are designed for a 40+ year lifespan — solid wood offers the advantage of being refreshed and restored over time.
How should I clean my wooden bathware?
Use Backwaters Non-Toxic Multi-Purpose Cleaning Liquid or a similar gentle, non-abrasive solution recommended for coated wooden surfaces. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive powders, rough scrubbers and tools that may damage the protective coating.
Can standard bathroom cleaning chemicals be used?
Strong acids, bleach, abrasive cleaners and aggressive chemical products should be avoided unless specifically approved for use on the product — unsuitable products may damage the finish or protective coating.
Can I request a customised design?
Handcrafted wooden products allow greater design flexibility than conventional mass-produced bathware. Customisation may be possible depending on design, dimensions, wood availability and technical requirements — contact our team with your preferred dimensions, style and project details.
Are Backwaters products environmentally responsible?
Yes — sustainability is central to our design and manufacturing. We use responsibly sourced timber, minimise waste and engineer for longevity, so each piece is made to be enjoyed for many years.
